A friend of mine wants to build a 6.5 Grendel with a 20" barrel which Alexander doesn't make. I told him to contact the barrel makers of his choice and ask them the type of chamber and bolt they use and both Lilja and JP said they use the SAMMI chamber and the type II bolt. Is this the direction that barrel makers are going to take?

Shilen does not use SAAMi last i checked but its close. I think many are saying SAAMI to get the horde off their back but using Grendel II;s to make sure they reliably work.

I checked myself with both Lilja and JP. Lilja said they only do SAMMI and JP said they only do Grendel II. I also checked with Satern and they said they do SAMMI but will do Grendel II on request. I actually have both -- one is an Alexander barrel and the other is a Liberty and I have shot a lot of factory ammo in both but when I reload I set the COL longer and don't want problems so I use the Liberty.

This is all starting to remind me of the 6.8spc and the 6.8spc2.

It's really a non issue if the chambers are done right.

The issue, for me, is the bolt. I also shoot x39, and I don't want the hassle of keeping track of "Type I" and "Type II" bolt faces - so all of mine are Type I. I have had zero issues with reliability. A lot has changed since both were introduced to the MSR platform. What might have been true then, isn't necessarily true today.

Works for me; YMMV.

What barrel did you order? the type 1 bolt will cause major head space problems on SAMMI and Grendel II barrels.
