I've been intrigued with this AR10 platform round since reading about it a couple of years ago, but it seems to have not won much favor with the big AR platform community. I like the big bore thumpers as well as the smaller distance shooters & would like to take one of these for a run. Any experiences with barrel lengths or twist rates for distance?
thnx

I have a DPMS Upper on a JMT Polymer lower and love it.  It will take any game on this continent inside of 300 yards.  The only issue is that I can't get mine to feed any soft point bullets.  I use the Cutting Edge Raptors for both deer and elk with great success.  It will shoot any of the tipped bullets very accurately. I have loaded Nosler Accubonds and other lead polymer tipped bullets and they all feed just fine.  But bullets like the Nosler Partitions just won't feed at all.  I can shoot inside 3/8 inch groups with tipped bullets at 100 yards with it.  It shoots the CE Raptor 176GR the best but they are too expensive for target use.

With that said I have 13 different caliber AR and LR uppers and the .338 Federal is my favorite.  I am currently building a 300wsm upper and hope that it will be my new favorite for elk as it will get beyond the 300 yard limit of the .338 Federal for big game.

I have loaded many different loads and found that the optimum powder is the old military standby Hodgdon's H335.

I am starting a 338 federal build. Have collected a few parts. Am still looking for upper receiver and barrel. Am looking at McGowan or X-Caliber so far. Any suggestions on dies. Will probably convert 308 LC 13. I was thinking about the Redding fl neck sized and seater. Thoughts?

Midway has a shieln match with bolt for $489.99, 18' stainless steel 1:10 twist. rcbs 2 die set for 29.99. I have two other shieln barrels, a .260 rem bolt action and a ar 5.56. the bolt action, shoots consistently in the .4s and the ar in the .6s, those are not the best groups but they are consistent. Looks like a 3-4 month on custom barrel ordering from most other barrel makers.

do you think 18" is enough barrel to burn up powder? I would have imagined a 22-24"

Yes  it will burn fine. You would probably pick up 25 fps per inch of barrel by going longer. My build is for 300yd or less shots. The .338 federal is not a long range cal. With the larger bore diameter the powder will burn faster. If you reload, the medium burning powders will work. I plan on using 200gr projectiles. I will be giving the 200gr hornaday ftx 1st chance. (I already have them) I have a few heavier bullets but I think the 200-210gr projectiles would be best. Perhaps there are others on this site that could chime in. I want to go with a shorter barrel due to wieght. I have an AR-308 with a 24" bull barrel and it is a beast. Great for the gun range but not for the bush.
