I had my 1st chance to hunt with my newly finished 300 WSM on an Elk hunt in Idaho last week.  This bull was fighting with a younger bull when I spotted him at about 400 yards.  Moved closer as they were fighting and at 180 yards the fight ended and the younger bull ran off.  The bull then turned broadside walking through the sage brush.  I used a pack as a rest and put a round just behind the front shoulder.  I heard the solid thump and saw him flinch from the shot but he started to move again.  I put a second round behind the shoulder again and heard the thump and he went down DRT.

When dressing him I found just a single entrance wound but 2 exit wounds about 10 inches apart.  When we hung and skinned him it became apparent that both shots entered in the same hole but because the angle changed they exited in different locations.

The gun is built from an 80% lower and a DPMS style upper.   Magpul PRS stock with a Pachmeyer grind to fit recoil pad.  Barrel is a BlackHole Weaponry 24" standard taper with polygonal rifling capped off with a M4-72 Superduty Compensator.

The re-chambering was done by Mtn. Arms in California.  Steve opened the bolt face and ejection port and then rebored the chamber to 300WSM.  The gas block is an adjustable made from titanium.

When sighted in at 200 yard zero it shoots a group that can be covered with a penny.

I am one happy dude!

Started as an AR10 upper an lower. Barrel was rechambered from 308 win to 300 WSM, ejection port opened to allow for the correct ejection. Bolt face opened to extract the larger case. Adjustable gas block to control the correct amount of gas as there is much greater gas pressure from the magnum cartridge. The great accuracy comes from the Black Hole Weaponry Barrel with polygonal rifling. Uses standard AR10 pmags. However mag capacity is reduced.

It was an expensive build but in my opinion well worth the extra cost. Can be made for less by using a lesser expensive barrel and brake if you want just typical hunting rifle accuracy.

This bull was taken in Idaho.  I am in NorCal.

The company that does the conversions is here:

http://mtnarms1776.wixsite.com/mountain-arms/300-wsm-custom-uppers

He does them as a sideline hobby.  You can supply your own upper as I did or let him build it.  I wanted a high end build so I got my own upper and ket him do the smith work.  He is a nice guy and does fine work.  There are a few others doing this conversion but after researching them I found some unsatisfied people with ejection problems etc.

The gas block has to be adjustable to compensate for the magnum cartridge but after a few range trips and settling on a load to use for my trip it has functioned flawlesly.

Ken

This is a 3 round group at 200 yards after sighting it in. Scope is a Nikon 3.5-14 with ffp bdc.

Load I used was worked up in Quickload software.

68 gr of Norma MRP, COL 2.795, 190 gr Nosler AB/LR bullet. PSI is 58748 at 2,940 average velocity. Cartridge max PSI is 63817. But this is a 4% compressed charge.

Be sure to work up your own load starting less 10% or more to find what works in your rifle.
